Secondary Education Major

About

In the Goshen College secondary education major, you’ll learn how to make the subject you love come alive for middle and high school students. Our intensive secondary education program prepares you to teach fifth through 12th grade students in diverse classrooms around the country. With this program’s integrated focus on hands-on learning, you’ll have the opportunity to start field placements in local classrooms during your first year of study. Your coursework will help you think critically and creatively about education in the United States, both past and present.

With a secondary education major, you’ll take education courses for a teaching license while double majoring in one of many possible subject areas: chemistry, English, English as a new language, life sciences, math, music, Spanish, physical education, physics, social studies, theater or visual art.

Over 90 percent of GC graduates who sought a teaching position in the last three years are now employed as teachers. As a secondary education major, you’ll be prepared to teach diverse students, integrate learning across disciplines and design creative and challenging curriculum—all essential for success in a middle or high school classroom.
